In 2025, the Kenyan Ministry of Education issued new regulations. Thirty-five boys aged ten to twelve were at risk of no longer being allowed to attend school. Sleeping facilities had to be provided for the boys – those were the new requirements.
Bureaucracy and how it was overcome
Digging and building began immediately at the Prosperity Junior Center.
Together with headmaster Patrick Murini, we looked for a solution. Patrick had the idea of clearing part of the school grounds and building a “Boys Dormitory” there.
The ambitious project got underway together with the Kibera Arts District (KAD) – a non-profit local institution that works with experienced architects, site managers, and a well-established team of craftsmen. In June 2025, KAD prepared a cost estimate for the ground floor of the new boys’ dormitory: €16,000 in total.
The money to get started came from funds remaining from 2024 as well as from additional donations by the student companies in Prien and Rosenheim, who put in a great deal of effort.
A solid foundation for the decades ahead
By mid-September, the plans were finalized, the construction site was cleared, and the workers were ready to go. Although the full construction budget was not yet secured, we took the risk and began the first phase of construction. This part was somewhat more demanding, as deep trenches had to be dug for a stable foundation.
The first and second floors can be built as soon as further funds become available.
Now it was up to our donors
To be able to continue building, our Nyendo team kept beating the drum among our circle of donors. And they found open ears and generous people! By 10.11.2025, so many private donations had come in that we were able to complete the project by spring 2026.
It is always impressive to see how the people on the ground get going with the construction projects once the starting signal is given!
The total cost of the dormitory came to €16,800.
