It all began in 2019 when Irmgard Wutte met Magdalena Wanjugu, the director of the NairoBits Trust. NairoBits is a non-profit organization active in Nairobi since 1999 that teaches ambitious young people from underprivileged backgrounds IT, promotes their entrepreneurial and creative skills and strengthens their life skills. Their objective is to change the lives of the mostly unemployed young people and enable them to enter the job market.

Lessons and exchanges

With this NairoBits team, the idea of setting up an IT center for around 30 students at the Kangemi Youth Centre was implemented. With the help of a grant of € 10,000 from the W.P. Schmitz Foundation in Düsseldorf, this was finally realized.

In December 2020, nyendo.lernen completely renovated a classroom at the Kangemi Youth Center that was no longer needed and fitted it with security doors and windows.

IT room installation

Course participants October-December 2022

At the end of July 2021, we received the funding approval from the W.P. Schmitz Foundation and were in a position to start equipping the room. In October 2021, NairoBits launched the first course after conducting an application and selection process with young people aged between 17 and 24. By December 2022, 47 young people had already completed an IT course, giving them a chance for the rest of their lives.

Besides the €10,000 from the W.P. Schmitz Foundation, Nyendo schools in Germany and Austria contributed a further €4,344 to make this project a reality.
