The Kibera Art District<\/a> (KAD)<\/strong> is a local artist initiative from Kibera in Nairobi that is known far beyond the boundaries of the neighborhood. As a valuable addition to regular lessons, Nyendo was able to recruit artists from the KAD to provide regular art classes at our partner schools in Kangemi and Kawangware.<\/p>\n

Since spring 2025, they have been supporting children and young people there through foundational creative work, free artistic expression, and personal guidance in their artistic development. The project was initially funded by donations from our Nyendo school in Rosenheim. Thanks to an additional foundation grant, the art classes can now continue in 2026 as well.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Start in spring 2025<\/h2><\/div>

Art is not normally part of the curriculum at our partner schools. When we learned about the Kibera Art District (KAD) artist initiative in spring 2025, the idea arose to combine their artistic expertise with the often undiscovered creativity of our students.<\/p>\n

After initial discussions, we succeeded in recruiting several KAD members as art teachers for our partner schools. The necessary funds were provided by our Nyendo school in Rosenheim.<\/p>\n

The art project was initially carried out over four months at the Prosperity Junior Center in Kangemi and at the Love School in Kawangware. A total of 24 weekly art lessons took place, always on Fridays. The aim of the program was to foster creativity, discover artistic talents, and provide the children with a structured foundation in the arts.<\/p>\n

In the first project phase at the Prosperity Junior Center in Kangemi, eight art lessons were held over two months, with an average of 35 participating students. Around 20 children showed clear artistic talent, while others benefited above all from the individual guidance and were able to develop their skills step by step.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Strong participation and high motivation \u2013 the project grows<\/h2><\/div>

The positive response encouraged us to expand the program further. In the second phase, art classes were introduced at the Love School in Kawangware and expanded in Kangemi at the same time.<\/p>\n

In Kawangware, 52 enrolled students took part in eight lessons, attended by an average of 45 children. In Kangemi, the number of participants was increased to 48 children, and a further eight art lessons were held.<\/p>\n

The high participation and great interest at both locations show how important creative activities are for the children. The art classes strengthened their ability to express themselves, made hidden talents visible, and created new opportunities to develop self-confidence and concentration.<\/p>\n

The experiences of the first year confirm the project’s potential. We are all the more delighted that, thanks to a foundation grant, funding for 2026 has been secured and the successful collaboration with the Kibera Art District will continue.<\/p>\n
