As in previous years, we, the student company Upendo Tamu from Rosenheim, were able to take part in the Nyendo network retreat. Students from grades 9, 10, and 11 joined along with our coaches.<\/p>\n

After arriving by ferry and the somewhat chaotic room assignments, we were able to begin the official part of the retreat: as every year, we started with a round of introductions and an outlook for the rest of the retreat. After dinner, we presented ourselves as a student company and showcased our projects from the past year. The student company from Prien did the same. It is always very interesting to see and hear what our “neighboring school” has been up to \u2013 it’s a great way to exchange ideas.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

After a partly quite adventurous night (due to illness), we still started fresh and full of anticipation into our traditional “Kenya Friday.” Walter, one of the headmasters of the partner schools in Nairobi, who had come to visit from Kenya, told us very movingly about his life story and his work as a school principal in the slums of Nairobi. His stories and his honest attitude toward life moved and touched us deeply. During the video chat with the headmasters and students from Kenya that followed, we once again gained a very special and real insight into school life there. The students who will be traveling to Nairobi this spring also had the chance to introduce themselves. As every year, it is so wonderful to see the children’s beaming faces and exchange a few words with them. We performed dances for each other, and local artists presented the Kibera Art District \u2013 an art movement in the slum that emerged organically and now beautifies life in the slum with wonderful works of art \u2013 a truly admirable and inspiring story.<\/p>\n

On Friday afternoon, guests came for the first time to participate in parts of the retreat. The 12th grade from Rosenheim, who had traveled to Kenya last year, had a lot to share and pass on to the upcoming classes. A highlight was the film evening, where they showed us their excellent film about their trip. Thank you for that!<\/p>\n

On Saturday, we spent the day planning the new business year for the student company and developing new business ideas, but we also reflected on the future of the Nyendo network in group sessions. It was a wonderful feeling to be included in this process, to be able to express our opinions and ideas, and to feel part of this community.<\/p>\n

We rounded off this last day with a dance evening. Having fun with the students from Prien, dancing and playing games, brought us even closer together. This sense of community was also reflected in the kitchen and cooking duties, which worked better than ever before.<\/p>\n

Overall, the entire retreat was a well-rounded and very enriching time, from which we head into the new business year motivated and with new tasks, projects, and goals.<\/p>\n

We also look forward with great anticipation to the Kenya trip of the 11th graders as part of their social internship and are excited to hear their stories.<\/p>\n

A heartfelt thank you to Brigitte Lindenhofer and Irmgard Wutte for the valuable experiences they shared with us and for the organization, and also to our coaches for their support and guidance.<\/p>\n
